How can I find out more about the Writing Center?
Browse our website (especially the pages about tutoring sessions and resources for writers), watch our introductory video, contact us via email or phone, or schedule an appointment.
Where is the Writing Center?
Writing Center services are located in 4026 JKB and 3322 HBLL and online at writingcenter.byu.edu.
How much does it cost?
Nothing. Writing Center services and resources are free to all BYU students.
Who can use the Writing Center? Is it only for students in English classes?
Everyone is welcome to use the Writing Center. We work with writers on any assignment at any stage of the writing process.
Do you help with grammar and usage?
Yes. All tutors are trained to help with grammar, usage, and mechanics. While tutors do not proofread or edit, they will help writers identify patterns of errors, deal with errors that affect clarity, and provide revision strategies for dealing with writing concerns.
What if my writing is not for a class?
We can still help you. We work with writers on unassigned writing projects such as résumés, application materials, creative pieces, personal histories, etc.
Can I request to work with a specific tutor?
Yes. You can schedule an appointment to work with a specific tutor through our online scheduler. However, you may also find it helpful to work with a variety of tutors.
I’m not a student or employee of BYU. Can I still receive help with a writing project?
For more information about how we work with writers from the community, please contact David Stock, BYU Writing Center Coordinator.
How can I prepare for an appointment?
Come prepared with your writing assignment, prompt, rubric, and notes; A current draft of the writing or ideas to discuss; and questions or concerns about your writing. For more information visit our page about tutoring sessions.
Do you help graduate students?
Yes. We provide tutoring sessions for graduate students and are exploring ways to further develop and tailor services for these writers. However, if you need help formatting your thesis or dissertation for final electronic (ETD) submission, you will want to visit the Learning Commons (HBLL 3rd floor).
Do you offer online tutoring?
Not yet, but we are currently developing this service.
Is Research & Writing Center (RWC) the same as Writing Center (WC)?
The writing assistance provided in the WC and RWC is the same. Research assistance in the RWC is provided by library research consultants.
Do I have to schedule an appointment? What if all the appointment slots are full?
We offer scheduled and drop-in appointments. Tutors are on staff to work with students who don’t have an appointment. However, we recommend making an appointment whenever possible. (The Research & Writing Center is a drop-in only location.)
How often can I work with a writing tutor?
Writers may receive no more than one hour of help each day. Additionally, writers are expected to revise and practice writing skills and strategies between tutoring sessions.
Who can I talk to about my Writing Center experience?
We welcome feedback. If you would like to talk to us about your visit or the resources available, contact us. We also send out surveys periodically and appreciate responses.
